New Jersey Teachers Union: Not Only Do We Not Want Basic Skills Test For the Children We Supposedly Teach, We Want An End to Basic Skills Tests for Teachers, Too

You can always tell who the good employees are. They're the ones crying out, "We demand an end to objective evaluation of our job qualifications and job performance!"

Yep, qualified, productive people are always looking for ways to end measurement of job performance. Highly skilled people hate evaluations based on merit!

One of New Jersey's main teachers unions is calling for the end of the basic skills test for certifying teachers.

The New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) is advocating for the demise of the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators: Reading, Writing and Math. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy's signing of Bill S1553 would eliminate that requirement; NJEA called the test "an unnecessary barrier" hindering the alleviation of teacher shortages.

"When the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) adopted changes to the administrative code around teacher certification, it missed an opportunity to eliminate this requirement, which created an unnecessary barrier to entering the profession," stated NJEA.

Passing scores for the basic skills test are 156 for reading, 150 for math, and 162 for writing. The maximum possible score is 200.

So, if I'm reading this right, to teach children basic skills at a child level, adults have to score about 75% -- a C grade, in other words -- on a basic skills (for children) test.

And our current crop of The Real Heroes and The Best and The Brightest finds this too difficult an ask.

Certain educators don't have to take the basic skills test: those who achieve an SAT, ACT, or GRE score in the top third percentile of the year they took it, as well as those who obtain a master's or terminal degree with a 3.0 minimum GPA.

Nicki Neily, founder and president of Parents Defending Education, insisted that there were better options for overcoming the teacher shortage other than reducing entry standards.

"Teachers should be able to pass a basic skills test before they're tasked with educating children in those core subjects," said Neily.

NJEA successfully advocated for the end of another teacher certification test last year, the educative Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA). NJEA criticized the edTPA as a costly, discriminatory, and unnecessary hindrance to overcoming the teacher shortage.

Of course it's "discriminatory."

NJ Governor is likely to give in to the teachers union, as Democrats always do.

He's also going to make it easier for students to show "growth." In other words, he's going to make it easier for incompetent teachers to fail to teach their students by ending another objective measure of student, and therefore teacher, performance.

Murphy also indicated that his administration would put Student Growth Objectives (SGOs) "on a diet," which he concurred were "bureaucracy-like." The SGOs are long-term academic goals for students set by teachers in collaboration with supervisors. The governor's remarks elicited applause and cheers from the NJEA conference crowd: "No more SGOs!"

This covid fascist then claimed that anyone objecting to teaching children that they can decide to the opposite sex, or to be a cat or dog or unicorn, is an "extremist."

The governor called those critical of modern public educators "extremists" seeking to insert political ideology in schools, citing specifically those against LGBTQ+ ideology in classrooms.

"They want to dim the light of truth and instead shroud our schools in the darkness of fear and intimidation," said Murphy. "Know that I have your backs unconditionally and always."

Yes we all know that, Covid Tyrant.

7 Three Palestinian College Students Shot In Potential Hate Crime

Two reactions: First, this is highly likely to end up being a gang-related incident, a drug deal gone bad, intramural Muslim butchery, wrong-place-wrong-time, or anything other than a hate crime. I find it very hard to believe three nice innocent Palis -- in their kaffiyehs -- were out minding their own business, and some irate "white man" shot them.

Second, even if it is some kind of hate crime, then "meh." Hard for me to get worked up over a few of these savages getting a taste of their own medicine. Welcome to the party, pal!

Third, in Vermont? Vermont? Wtf are a bunch of Palestinians doing in VT?

It was fascinating that kids wouldn't even stay in class. They just walked out and no one stopped them once they "showed up" for the day. Try teaching 9th grade English to kids who can't read and don't bother staying around to even try. She took her 1st day lesson plans mid year and tossed them to teach words. 84 It was fascinating that kids wouldn't even stay in class.

Kevin Drum:

n Washington DC's public high schools, about two-thirds of all students last year were chronically absent (missed 10%+ of all school days). About a third were profoundly chronically absent (missed 30%+ of all school days).

This is up considerably from the previous year, primarily because of excused absences: parents are actively holding back their kids from attending school at far higher rates than the past.

But the minority schools will get the dregs who can't even pass sixth grade math.

What is the purpose of a union?

To allow workers to do less work and be lazy-asses and still get promotions and increased pay for doing ever-decreasing work.

Thanksgiving day I got word that my aunt had passed away at age 77. We were told on the Sunday before that she had been diagnosed with stage 4 bone cancer. Unfortunately that is when she and her husband found out also. The funeral was Sat. Before the service started, my son informed me that his uncle on his father side had passed away at age 59. He had been in a nursing home for a few years since having two heart attacks and at least one stroke.
My son is dealing with phlebitis and may be flying to California this week so he may not be able to attend his uncle's funeral.
Hubbymayhem and I were ripping stuff that we can sell out of the old house. The phone company is infested with assholes who won't do their fucking job. And I'm gonna take up drinking as a hobby.

"But the problem with deflation is that when people begin to expect lower prices in the future, they have little incentive to make purchases right now. There are many complaints on social media from Gazans that the aid that enters the Strip for free from the donor countries (food, water, fuel, gas) is sold to the residents by the merchants and at exorbitant prices.

It was also reported that at gas stations in the southern Gaza Strip, Hamas police bypass the long lines and take whatever they want without worrying about queuing, as required by their duties.

If COVID didn't show you that there will never be a cure for cancer then you weren't paying close enough attention.

Endless expensive treatment to keep people *just* well enough is the plan of the medical industry. It was idle speculation that was grumbled about in waiting rooms for years. Now we know it's the truth.

The food and service were fine. The neighborhood, though, has become a trashy theme park, with every other business, it seems, hawking tourist crap and "Voodoo" something-or-other. The streets -- in possibly the most famous hundred square blocks in America, mind you, supposedly a showplace and draw for tourist $ -- the streets are in terrible shape. Homeless huddle in alcoves at the rear of hotels and panhandlers roam on what used to be the main shopping street.

As much as I hate where I live, I was glad to get back home.

222 Pope Francis has blasted the “backwardness” of some conservatives in the U.S. Catholic Church, saying they have replaced faith with ideology and that a correct understanding of Catholic doctrine allows for change over time...Many conservatives have blasted Francis’ emphasis instead on social justice issues such as the environment and the poor, while also branding as heretical his opening to letting divorced and civilly remarried Catholics receive the sacraments.

In this country, Christianity has largely morphed into a cult of hatred.

Imagine claiming to be a follower of Christ and being upset for someone placing too much emphasis on the poor. Evangelicals possess an incongruent sham of an ideology.

They're blasting him for being "Christ-like". Smdh, and the American bishops wonder why people aren't going to church and filling their coffers.

241 Remember that for public schools, education has always been a secondary consideration. They first were designed to condition kids to grow up into good, reliable, complaint factory workers. Livingston demographics: 1,952 kids in high school; AP participation 76%; 2% of students economically disadvantaged. 42.9% minority - largely Asian (32%) and then Hispanic (4.6%)

Summit Public School District contains 9 schools and 3,895 students. The district’s minority enrollment is 40%. (Primarily, 18.7% Hispanic, 11% Asian, 4% Black.) 7.8% of students economically disadvantaged. 81% of high school students tested at or above the proficient level for reading, and 78% tested at or above that level for math.

303 > What they're doing to the inner city kids is fucking criminal.

The teachers are definitely low quality, but I don't think most people here understand how truly off the rails bad the entire situation is in the inner cities.

Kids are commonly born with fetal alcohol syndrome and / or addicted to some substance. Dad splits the moment he's done ejaculating. Mom is a petty criminal with anger issues or she's constantly working low skill jobs. Sometimes she dumps the kid at Grandma's because she lost her job or she got kicked out of her apartment. The kid is constantly shunted from one school to the next because the Mom goes from one job to the next or moves in with anyone who dates her more than a couple of months.

Lots of these kids have seen murders, rapes, etc at a young age and or have been assaulted by several adults.

Kids tend to copy the behaviors of people around them and a vast plurality of their examples in the inner city are thug life, addicts, or have given up.

Someone posted a video from a birthday party for a 4-5 year old where the music was rappy, the decor was blingy, and the kid was waving around a gun (probably real, I'd guess) in sway with the music.

And he was flanked by parental figures nodding along with the music and loving what they saw.

339 30 years ago while living in California, my friends, all technicians, would almost to a one date teachers. None of the teachers were from California, they were all from the midwest more or less, and moved to Cali, because Cali, and also because the pay was so much more. The genius' that they were didn't take into account the cost of living, which makes no sense since the midwest, other than Illinois, is painfully inexpensive, especially back then, while California is excruciatingly expensive, even back then.

One day, I was hanging with one of my friends, and I saw a study book, and asked what it was, he said, "a study book." Oh, I'm curious what they have to be proficient in.

LITERALLY like you said, basic stuff, which is fine, no reason to be dealing with theory and shit when you are teaching gradeschoolers, just give them the information that they need and show them how to use it, yay! right?

Nope. NOPE. NOPE! I flipped through and I asked which of his exes study book it was, not believing it could possibly be Patty's. She's a kind and thoughtful person who never came off as a dunce.
